Pinus radiata

  • Program

seedEnergy supplies improved seed for approximately a third of Australia’s Pinus radiata plantation estates as a licensed seed producer of elite genetic material developed by Tree Breeding Australia (TBA). The TBA breeding program currently leverages data from 607,294 genotypes across 270 trials nationally, with genetic values updated yearly. seedEnergy produces both open-pollinated (OP) and control-pollinated (CP) seed, managing 12 OP orchards and a CP orchard across 104 hectares in South Australia. To bring the latest and best genotypes to the market as early as possible, seedEnergy has a “rolling front” approach to OP seed orchard establishment, where orchards run on 15-year rotations, offset so that every 1-2 years the oldest orchard is felled and replanted with new high value grafted genotypes. Genotypes in the CP orchard are reviewed annually, and periodically replaced with high value, well tested selections.
